Challenging Media Messages About Immigration PD
Thanks to Hive Chicago and the Chicago Community Trust, Yollocalli is able to provide another great professional development workshop for teachers.
CHALLENGING MEDIA MESSAGES ABOUT IMMIGRATION
Saturday, March 25th, 12pm – 4pm
National Museum of Mexican Art
1852 W 19th Street
Free. Lunch provided. CPDUs provided.
How can we analyze news media influence on how we think, talk and feel about immigration in America? How can we recognize and challenge biased media representations of immigrants? How might we help youth use video media to share their perspectives and lend their voice in solidarity with the struggles facing immigrant communities?
The National Museum of Mexican Art will introduce the museum’s collection and will have teachers examine immigration issues through the artworks. Following this introduction, The LAMP will introduce MediaBreaker/Studios — a free online video editing tool — as a tool educators can use to help students deconstruct and challenge harmful, inaccurate and manipulative media messages and representations. We will develop hands-on learning experiences and activities that will equip youth with skills and concepts needed to respond critically to biased media, deceptive language and influential propaganda.
Apply by March 20th. Space is limited.
