archival video footage, current media, and snapchat to create video projects that reflect current issues in Chicago

Chicago Slices + Snapchat

Over the summer we worked with a Yollocalli student to use Media Burn in a unique way. Snapchat is a unique video tool that we knew most youth already use. Following similar projects we have seen (Tribeca Snapchat Stories and one of our other youth programs doing snapchat horror stories) we wanted to see how we could use Snapchat as a way to combine archival video footage and live video footage.

With the help from our friends at CCAS, we showcased our simple lesson plan on how to use Snapchat at the Make, Take, Teach Fair on August 22, 2016. Our young artist, Yuridia, created a snap story that combined footage about the destruction of Cabrini Green and gentrification she saw in Pilsen.

We look forward to sharing this idea with our Chicago Slice Teacher Cohort. We hope they come up with other great lesson plans to implement into the classroom. We are even more excited to see what the students will come up with when thinking about how Chicago’s past is connected with the present.

Chicago Slices is funded byThe Hive Chicago Fund for Connected Learning (Fund) at The Chicago Community Trust.
